Empowering the New Frontline: People, Technology, and the Future of Customer Experience

July 15, 2026 | By Retailers Association of India

Reliance Retail is future-proofing customer experience by empowering frontline talent with smart technology, structured skilling, and continuous development—turning store associates into confident brand ambassadors from day one.

The role of the store associate has fundamentally changed. Today's customer expects the right experience: the human touch of a well-informed associate who can personalize solutions and truly understand their needs. This human element has become the ultimate differentiator in modern retail, transforming a transaction into a service experience. Delivering this consistently requires the right candidate selection, structured learning, and certification. Our proactive investment ensures that every frontline interaction strengthens brand loyalty and drives business growth. To address this need, we developed a mobile-based application called Reliance Samarth.

Tools and Tech That Enhance Real-Time Customer Experience

Empowerment begins with the right technology. The smartphone is the most potent operational tool, transforming associates from clerks into sales consultants. To ensure this tool is used effectively, our technology strategy integrates a robust pre-hiring and skilling system. At its core is the Reliance Samarth application, which functions as a digital skilling and pre-certification pipeline.

The Digital Talent Pipeline

Reliance Samarth is a comprehensive mobile-based application offering an end-to-end digital journey from registration to hiring, enabling scale, transparency, and consistency. Screening, interviewing, learning, assessment, and certification are standardized nationwide, ensuring uniform talent quality across locations.

Key features include:

  • Accessibility & Screening: Available on the Play Store and App Store and accessible via QR codes, the app enables easy registration followed by multilingual pre-screening (randomised MCQs on English, maths, and customer orientation) and an AI-based asynchronous video interview.
  • Targeted Learning & Role Assignment: Candidates receive retail orientation and exposure to various formats and are mapped to suitable roles based on screening outcomes.
  • Learning Content & Certification: Byte-sized, self-paced, modular learning in English and six regional languages covers products, processes, customer management, and selling skills. The journey concludes with an assessment and a RASCI co-branded certification.

Pre-certified candidates join with foundational knowledge, enabling faster productivity, confidence from day one, and improved customer experience outcomes.

HR Strategies: Autonomy, Recognition, and Continuous Feedback

While technology enables, people deliver the brand experience. Our HR strategy emphasizes trust, autonomy, and ownership. Samarth also helps reduce attrition by ensuring candidates clearly understand roles, expectations, and work environments before joining.

Autonomy is extended across stakeholders:

  • Store Managers and HRBPs gain access to a ready talent pool, reducing reliance on external hiring.
  • Candidates can choose roles, formats, and locations based on informed decisions during their learning journey.

The platform evaluates candidates objectively using transparent metrics such as assessment scores, interview outcomes, learning completion time, and stage-wise performance. Continuous feedback from HRBPs, candidates, and surveys ensures ongoing improvement and relevance of the platform.

Reliance Retail's Training for Frontline Excellence

Training is our key differentiator. Our programs focus on building sales consultants and problem-solvers while improving employability and career security for Indian youth. This approach is anchored in two strategic objectives:

Skilling for Incoming Candidates

Reliance Samarth serves as a pre-certified talent pool, ensuring candidates are trained in product knowledge, processes, and customer management before joining. Post-hiring, learning deepens through hands-on immersion: freshers undergo a six-month On-the-Job Training (OJT), while experienced hires complete a fifteen-day induction. This ensures consistency and productivity across locations.

Upskilling and Reskilling the Existing Workforce

Continuous development supports career growth and internal mobility. Our blended learning model combines classroom and digital formats, including competency-based training, advanced selling skills, behavioral programs, and periodic product and process refreshers—delivered through mobile, self-paced modules.

Career progression is structured and merit-based. Store associates are screened for growth through aptitude and behavioral assessments and interviews, while leadership roles follow a structured Assessment and Development Centre (ADC) framework with six months of OJT to ensure readiness.
