Building The Next Generation Of Retail Leaders: How Industry–Academia Collaboration Is Deepening In India

July 14, 2026 | By Retailers Association of India

As India’s retail sector accelerates toward the $1-trillion mark, the conversation around growth is increasingly shifting from store counts and scale to talent, skills, and leadership readiness. Over the past year, the Retailers Association of India (RAI) has quietly but decisively expanded its footprint in education and skill development, working with leading academic institutions to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the realities of modern retail.

A key milestone in this journey was the successful completion of the Retail Excellence Programme (REP) – Batch 2, a two-day residential learning initiative conducted in collaboration with Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. Designed for senior retail leaders and independent retailers, the programme brought together 13 participants from organisations such as Seasons Apparel, Miarcus, Hatsun Agro Product, Reliance Retail, DNV Food Products, Falooda Nation, among others.

Led by IIM Calcutta faculty, the programme focused on core themes shaping contemporary retail from customer centricity and operational excellence to strategic marketing and innovation. More than a training module, REP functioned as a peer-learning environment where participants exchanged lived experiences from the shopfloor and boardroom alike, underscoring the growing demand for executive education rooted in real-world retail challenges.

At the institutional level, RAI has also strengthened long-term pathways into retail careers. In partnership with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), it has launched an MBA in Retail Management aimed at widening access to formal retail education. Open to graduates from all disciplines, the programme combines academic frameworks with industry exposure and will be delivered through IGNOU’s extensive nationwide network of study centres, making structured retail education accessible beyond metro cities.

Further reinforcing industry–academia linkages, RAI has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur to jointly develop learning, research, and skill-building initiatives. The collaboration focuses on co-creating short-term certification and executive programmes, enabling faculty–industry exchanges, and offering students direct exposure to India’s retail ecosystem through RAI’s network. The intent is clear: to blend academic rigour with operational insight in a sector that is evolving faster than most traditional curricula.

A similar approach underpins RAI’s partnership with Vignana Jyothi Institute of Management (VJIM), Hyderabad, where the two institutions are jointly designing a Bridge Course in Functional Retail Management. The programme is aimed at addressing the often-cited gap between management education and on-ground retail operations, while also extending.

Academic membership benefits to students and faculty, strengthening engagement beyond the classroom.

Engagement with students has remained a critical pillar of RAI’s education efforts. In one such initiative, Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO of RAI, conducted an interactive session with BBA and MBA students at Symbiosis University of Applied Sciences, sharing perspectives on India’s evolving retail landscape and the opportunities it presents for young professionals.

The interaction coincided with the signing of an MoU between RAI and the university to establish a Centre of Excellence in Retail at its Indore campus, a move aimed at creating a dedicated hub for retail-focused learning and research. Rajagopalan was also felicitated during the university’s 7th Convocation Ceremony, reflecting the growing recognition of industry engagement within academic institutions.

Taken together, these initiatives signal a broader shift in how India’s retail sector is thinking about talent. As formats diversify, technology deepens, and consumer expectations evolve, the industry’s future will increasingly depend on leaders who combine strategic thinking with operational fluency.

Through sustained collaboration with academic partners, RAI appears to be laying the groundwork for exactly that; quietly shaping the talent pipeline that will power Indian retail’s next phase of growth
