This year marks a significant milestone in the annals of fashion history — the centennial year of the legendary designer P N RAO. Known for his impeccable craftsmanship, timeless designs, and resolute devotion to the art of tailoring, Rao has woven an everlasting tapestry of influence in the fashion world.

Born in 1903 to humble beginnings, Pishe Narayan Rao was a mere toddler when he lost his father. Raised in Shivajinagar by his mother, formal education eluded him, prompting him to earn a living for his family from a young age. From his early years on the work floor, he amassed invaluable industry insights, igniting his fascination with fabrics, colours, and aesthetics, which would later form the backbone of his pioneering work.

At the tender age of 20, Rao launched P N RAO in 1923 in a modest 100 sq. ft. store at #69 South Parade on M.G. Road in Bengaluru. Even before marketing jargon existed, his strategic location fostered brand visibility, drawing a diverse consumer base. He began his venture with rudimentary tools, gradually importing fabrics from London and France. Despite starting as a ladies' tailor, Rao soon garnered a European clientele, drawn by his exceptional tailoring skills.

Riding the tide of post-independence India, P N RAO ventured into modernising men's fashion, especially formal wear, by partnering with brands like Raymond and Liberty Shirts. The introduction of ready-to-wear garments at his son's advice marked a profitable turn for the brand.

P.N. Rao's name rapidly became synonymous with elegance and sophistication. His signature balance of tradition and modernity captured the essence of the contemporary gentleman, while his focus on personalised shopping experiences set new industry standards. His detailed involvement from initial consultation to final fitting marked his dedication to customer satisfaction.

Interestingly, P N RAO was initially known as P N Row, as recounted by Mr. Ketan Pishe. A 1970s plastic suit cover bearing the name "P N RAO Tailors" and "P N RAO Menswear" hinted at the brand's evolution. Under the stewardship of the third generation, the brand logo was revisited in 2006, giving birth to a new symbol inspired by the timeless herringbone weave, synonymous with menswear.

In honour of P N RAO's centenary, it is essential to appreciate the enduring influence of his legacy. His timeless designs continue to shape the sartorial preferences of modern men and inspire emerging designers. His commitment to quality and distinctiveness remind us that true style transcends fleeting trends. As P N RAO stays on top of evolving fashion currents, its suit collection bears testament to its continuous innovation and trendsetting vision.

The future looks promising for P N RAO, with exciting plans afoot. A solar-powered custom tailoring facility on the outskirts of Bengaluru and a comprehensive expansion into fashion wear for both men and women signal the brand's relentless pursuit of excellence. A bust of the late Shri Pishe Narayan Rao, unveiled at ITC Windsor in Bangalore, stands as a tribute to the illustrious lineage of P N RAO.

As we toast to the centennial year of P N RAO, we reflect on his tremendous contributions to the fashion industry. His legacy continues to shine as brightly as his timeless designs, illuminating the path for generations to follow. Here's to P N RAO, a true pioneer, whose influence will be cherished and celebrated for many more years to come.
