The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) directive mandating a 60% Kannada representation on shop signboards in Karnataka has sparked legal contention. RAI's writ petition against this requirement led to an interim stay order by the Karnataka High Court.
During the proceedings on 18th March 2024, RAI's legal team argued the act's constitutional inconsistencies, specifically citing Article 345 and a preceding Karnataka High Court judgment. The state's Advocate General confirmed the act's gazettal, but the enforcement date remains unannounced.
The High Court, acknowledging the challenges presented, stayed the BBMP's directive regarding shop sealing and asked the state to clarify the enforcement date. It also restrained precipitative actions against petitioners until further clarification and allowed petitioners to represent their compliance difficulties.
