In recent months, significant strides have been made in the field of retail training and education in India, highlighting the collaborative efforts of esteemed organizations and institutions. Here's a closer look at the initiatives reshaping the landscape of retail training and education.

Mandatory Food Safety Supervisor Training by FSSAI

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has instituted a mandatory Food Safety Training & Certification (FoSTaC) for all food retailers. In compliance with the FSSAI's directive, food business operators holding Central or State Licenses are now required to have at least one trained and certified Food Safety Supervisor for every 25 food handlers. This initiative is crucial in ensuring adherence to food safety practices. The recent offline sessions of FoSTaC, with 127 participants, underscore the industry's commitment to maintaining high standards of food safety.

Innovative BBA Programme in Retailing by RAI and IGNOU

The Retailers Association of India (RAI) and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) have joined forces to offer a unique three-year Bachelors in Business Administration (Retailing) through distance learning. This programme blends academic theory with practical experience, requiring students to complete a three-month internship to gain firsthand insights into the retail industry.

Internship and Job Fair at IGNOU

The School of Management Studies at IGNOU, in collaboration with RAI, hosted an Internship/Job Fair for students pursuing BBA in Retailing. The event, held on February 8, 2024, saw participation from over 15 retail brands and more than 100 students. This fair was a significant step in bridging the gap between academic preparation and professional opportunities in the retail sector.

Academic Collaboration with Jagan Institute of Management Studies (JIMS)
Jagan Institute of Management Studies (JIMS), a prominent B-School in India specializing in Retail Management, is one of RAI's academic members. RAI has extended its industry outreach to JIMS students by organizing the Excellence in Store Operations (ESOPs) workshop. The workshop, held on February 17, 2024, featured eminent speakers such as Anurag Pandey from More Retail, Nitin Puneyani of Reliance Retail, and Kaushik Sheel from Lifestyle International Pvt Ltd.

Conclusion

These initiatives reflect a robust movement towards elevating the standards of education and training in the retail industry. From rigorous safety training to innovative academic programs and practical workshops, the sector is witnessing a comprehensive approach to preparing future professionals. This synergy between regulatory bodies, educational institutions, and industry associations is paving the way for a more skilled, knowledgeable, and compliant retail workforce, ultimately benefiting consumers and businesses alike.
